The natural beauty of Mattawa, Ontario, is unparalleled all year round. When fall reds, yellows, and oranges take over the usual green leaves of the trees, it’s especially beautiful. Fall foliage surrounds our variety of 12 cottages. However, viewing the leaves firsthand is a great way to celebrate the start of fall season in Canada. When you’re not exploring our 148 acres of backcountry trails at Mattawa River Resort, take a day trip to experience our top picks on where to see fall colours in Ontario.

Keep in mind, viewing fall foliage maps helps pinpoint the best time to see fall colours in Ontario, showing when and where the changing leaves are at their peak.

Algonquin Park

A two-hour drive from our resort is Algonquin Provincial Park, the very first provincial park in Ontario. During your visit, hike to the challenging Booth’s Rock Trail, where highlights include a breathtaking lookout, two lakes, and an abandoned railway on the 5.1-kilometre loop. Although the trail is fairly difficult, the view from the lookout will be worth the effort. It’s definitely one of the most stunning options of where to see fall colours in Ontario.

Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park

Only a few kilometres from the resort is Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park, where an abundance of trails provide views of the Mattawa River and forests with vibrant red pine forests. The Etienne System and Kag Trails are the most challenging, with the steepest and longest climbs, but the Wabashkiki and Forestry Research Trails are much shorter and more manageable, with the longest being a two-kilometer loop. Depending on the level of difficulty, the park has plenty of choices for where to see fall colours in Ontario.

VMUTS Trails

If you don’t want to venture too far from the property, the Voyageur Multi-Use Trail System is already connected to our 148 acres of trails at Mattawa River Resort

If you’re feeling adventurous, bring along your mountain bikes and dirt bikes to traverse the trails. The VMUTS trails are so extensive that it would take two weeks to traverse every inch. Spend the entirety of the best time for fall colours in Ontario soaking in the beauty if you please.
